A Hairstylist’s Take on African Fashion Week Paris

The energy at African Fashion Week Paris was palpable, but for one stylist, it was an unexpected, whirlwind experience. "I was tagged by a friend in their post and thought, why not try my luck? I didn’t actually think I’d be selected," Barbara of Studio Adakou admits with a smile.

When she finally got the email confirming her place, it came as a shock. "It was very last minute, and I didn't get a proper brief." Despite the surprise and lack of preparation, she dove headfirst into the experience.

Being the only hair stylist, she had to work with a diverse range of models and styles, often making decisions on the spot. "I wasn’t told what the models were going to look like, so I had to think on my feet and decide what styles would work best for each person," she explains. "For some, I pulled back their Afro-textured hair to accentuate their face; for others, I braided cornrows or worked with natural crowns."

Working at such a large-scale event was different from her usual routine. "I had to think fast and execute quickly because there was no room for mistakes," she recalls. Despite the fast pace, she managed to stay grounded and focused on ensuring the models felt comfortable with their looks. "It was important to me that the models were happy with their hair. I didn’t want to force anything too complicated, especially since they were doing multiple looks."

Looking back, she found the experience invaluable. "It gave me the confidence to trust my instincts and skills, especially under pressure."

While the chaos and unpredictability were challenging, she found joy in working as part of a team. "There were quite a few [makeup] stylists, and though we didn’t necessarily collaborate on styles, the sense of camaraderie was there. Everyone was in the same boat, working to bring out the best in each model."

Born to Nigerian parents and raised in the United Kingdom, Barbara’s work as a creative entrepreneur in France continues to elevate her reputation. She owns Studio Adakou, a bilingual (English and French) salon located at 23 Rue Le Sueur in the heart of Paris, just a stone's throw from the iconic Eiffel Tower. Specialising in both Afro and European hair textures, her salon caters to a diverse clientele, blending luxury with inclusivity. With a growing list of celebrity clients such as Solange Knowles, Adut Akech, Heidi Klum, and Bella Hadid, Studio Adakou is becoming a beacon of high-end hair artistry in the fashion capital of the world.

As for what's next? She’s not resting just yet. "I'm so happy to have been part of it, but I’m already looking forward to new opportunities."
