What is your name and what are your pronouns? Not one of my favourite brands not knowing my government name, it’s Damilola Waterton and my pronouns are he/him/his
...I’m either looking like a homeless junkie, I have dealt with addiction issues so I can say this from experience lmao, or I’m looking like I could be on the runway...
How do your personal experiences affect the way you view fashion?
They go hand in hand, for instance, when I’m in a bad place mentally or physically I don’t care about the way I’m dressed. When I’m in a great head space, like I currently am, I start putting in more effort. I’m either looking like a homeless junkie, I have dealt with addiction issues so I can say this from experience lmao, or I’m looking like I could be on the runway. A friend of mine released some merchandise, consisting of hoodies and Jumpers called FREE ME ABEG and I can’t begin to explain how comfortable that hoodie is and how it’s transitioned in both my homeless and ‘runway’ looks.
Tell us about an OG Nigerian brand you love and why you love them. My OG Nigerian brand is/was Fekeye Sekida, I have too many signature pieces and love the use of Ankara and Adire. I have a Clearly Invincible shirt that I’ve worn almost like a uniform and it’s survived.
N.B. While Clearly Invincible is now operating as a fashion consulting agency, C.I. was once a fashion brand where each stitch and seam of their garments spoke volumes about quality, innovation, and unapologetic style. From chic urban wear to timeless classics, every piece bore the unmistakable mark of C.I.'s commitment to excellence.
What was the first Nigerian-made piece you bought? An Orange Culture shirt from his IF collaboration with Davido.
...those pants give me so much confidence and they’re extremely comfortable. I can’t explain how his clothes make you feel, it’s an experience.
Can you tell us about some Nigerian-made items in your wardrobe and what they mean to you? 1. I have these Sisiano pants that mean the absolute world to me, I was going to wear them to a disco-themed event this past week, but then realised I had burnt them as an iron fell on them while I was in active addiction. Have to find a way to mend that because those pants give me so much confidence and they’re extremely comfortable. I can’t explain how his clothes make you feel, it’s an experience.
2. My Black and White Clearly Invincible shirt, transports me back to 2018 when I first got gifted the shirt by my homegirl Sessi. That was a great time in my life. I feel super relaxed but extremely sexy in that because the silk material just clings on me in the right way.
Name a small, growing Nigerian brand you’re currently impressed with and why. She’s probably not small anymore, so I’d say she’s growing. But Kai collective. Truly love the way she connects with her community and the intentionality in her design and emails. Love how she’s expanded on the Gaia print and how she manages to not oversaturate it. She made a long trench coat and lined it with the print and I was so amazed. Those little details mean a lot to me.
Love what THIS IS US is doing as well, another extremely intentional brand. The things they’re doing in terms of fashion and design and sustainability? Insane!!! I was gifted some shirts from the brand as I helped set up and created some content for them and I’m currently leaving an interview wearing the shirt. It’s super functional, and soft and looks great on me.
...Business in the front, party at the back
What’s your most coveted Nigerian-made piece at the moment?
Sisiano Shirt from his SS ’22 collection, it’s multicoloured velvet strips in the front and sheer mesh at the back. As I like to say “Business in the front, party at the back”
