What Happened in African Fashion This Week

This week, Canadian-Ghanaian designer Spencer Badu releases a sneaker collaboration with French brand Hoka, and three diasporan designers of African origin bag residency at Atelier Jolie in New York. In addition, Algeria fashion week becomes an official partner of Canex IATF 2025 (an annual intra-African trade fair).

AJABENG RELEASES "POST DRIP" COLLECTION

Ajabeng is an eco-friendly fashion brand in Ghana. The fashion house is known for experimenting with masculine and feminine silhouettes to create androgynous pieces. Their newest collection, titled "Post -Drip" is inspired by a book (Nihilism and Negritude: Ways of Living in Africa) written by Célestin Monga, an African author. With an editorial shot in Dakar, Senegal, pieces from the collection range from earthy textured two-piece sets to headties, creating a clean and soft silhouette.

ALGER FASHION WEEK BECOMES A PARTNER OF CANEX IATF 2025

Alger fashion week was founded in 2011 and has become one of the leading fashion weeks in Algeria, showcasing the country's fashion scene. The platform is now partnering with CanexIATF2025 (the IATF is an annual intra-African trade fair), happening in Algeria this year, and would feature visitors and exhibitors from different African countries and around the world for a week. Activities include networking, conferencing, cultural performance, and deal-making. The partnership between Alger fashion week and CanexIATF2025 is essential because it gives African Designers a platform to showcase and reach a new audience.

THREE DIASPORA AFRICAN BRANDS TO JOIN A RESIDENCY IN NEW YORK THIS MAY

Three diasporan African designers have been announced for a residency this May at Atelier Jolie in New York. Founded by American actress Angelina Jolie, the atelier is described as a creative space. Ozwald Boateng (an African heritage brand) will be joined by The Rad Black Kids (a Zimbabwe-American eco-friendly streetwear brand) and Chuks Collins (a Nigerian-British-American luxury brand). The residency will feature a panel discussion on design, culture, and identity.

AFRICAN FASHION IS SET TO TAKE PLACE IN PARIS THIS JUNE

The African fashion up showcase is the first foremost Parisian event dedicated to contemporary African fashion and is used to spotlight African fashion and the winners of the African fashion up program, It will take place on June 25th in Paris. Past winners of the program include Rich Mnisi (South Africa), Taju Ibrahim of TJWHO (Nigeria), Aristide Loua of Kente Gentlemen (Cote d'Ivoire), Mina Binebine (Morocco), Larry Jafaru of Larry Jay (Ghana), and many more.

GHANAIAN GALLERY, NUBUKE FOUNDATION TO HOLD FASHION POP-UP

From the 23-25th May, Nubuke Foundation, an art and culture institution based in Ghana, will hold a fundraising event. The fundraiser will feature a fashion photography exhibition by Robert Owen Jones alongside a fashion pop-up from Ghanaian Designers.

Spencer Badu is an eponymous Canadian-Ghanaian fashion brand known for exploring androgynous silhouettes. Badu has collaborated with Hoka, a French sneaker brand, to release a piece. The new sneaker drop is a reimagination of Hoka's Elevon X model variant. Badu's new design of the sneakers pays homage to his Ghanaian roots, opting for a sharp yellow hue, the use of cowries, and the Adinkra symbols.
