Across African countries this week, governments, brands, and initiatives roll out different activities to enhance fashion. From trans-seasonal collection releases, to how the second-hand clothing market is boosting Mozambique’s industry in addition to a virtual event of Intellectual property in fashion.

THE ABRYANZ STYLE AND FASHION AWARDS RETURN THIS DECEMBER AFTER 2 YEAR HIATUS

The Abrynaz Style and Fashion Awards will return on December 12, 2025, after a two-year hiatus. The year's edition, themed "The Fashivists," will take place at the Kampala Serena Hotel in Uganda.


Since its inception in 2013, the awards have recognized some of Africa’s most celebrated designers, including Mai Atafo, David Tlale, and Ozwald Boateng. It also spotlights models, stylists, makeup artists, media personalities, and influencers shaping the continent’s fashion industry.

SOUTH AFRICAN BRAND MUSAWENKOSi UNVEILS FW25 COLLECTION AT MOSCOW FASHION WEEK

South African brand MUSAWENKOSi made its debut at Moscow Fashion Week on Saturday, March 16. It unveiled its Fall-Winter 2025 collection, presenting a bold take on modern tailoring. Founded by Musawenkosi Tailor, the brand celebrates Black excellence and African storytelling.


The collection uses intricate needling and threading techniques to bring African tales to life. Moving away from traditional prints, MUSAWENKOSi reimagines African aesthetics for a modern, fashion-forward audience.

MOZAMBIQUE'S SECOND-HAND CLOTHING INDUSTRY PROVIDES FOR 85% OF THE COUNTRY'S POPULATION

A new report commissioned by ADPP Mozambique highlights the significant impact of the second-hand clothing (SHC) industry on the country’s economy and daily life. The sector meets the basic clothing needs of 85% of the population, provides 200,000 jobs, and generates $35 million in taxes, which supports essential services like education and healthcare.


ADPP Mozambique, a non-governmental organization focused on health, sustainability, and education, underscores the SHC industry's crucial role in Mozambique, where affordable clothing remains a necessity for millions.

THE FASHION LAW INSTITUTE TO HOLD WEBINAR ON INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN FASHION

With growing concerns over intellectual property in fashion, The Fashion Law Institute will host a virtual webinar on March 27, 2025, from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM (GMT). The session will cover how designers and brands can protect their work under IP law, and registration is now open.

OBSIDIAN ADVISORY AFRICA HOSTS WOMEN IN FASHION AFRICA CONFERENCE

Obsidian Advisory Africa hosted the Women in Fashion Africa Conference on Friday, March 21, bringing together industry professionals from across the continent. Held under the theme "Connect. Collaborate. Create," the virtual event featured speakers like Faith Senam, a visionary entrepreneur and founder of Women in PR Ghana, Lauren Henry, a fashion educator and commentator,and mentors from Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa.

SOUTH AFRICAN DESIGNERS JOIN FIGHT AGAINST COUNTERFEIT FASHION

South African fashion brands Maxhosa Africa, Imprint ZA, Gert Johan Coetzee, and Africa Your Time Now have joined the Alliance Against Counterfeit (AAC) to combat the growing threat of fake fashion products. The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) estimates that counterfeit goods could make up 10% of the country’s economy, posing a major risk to local designers and businesses. In response, CGCSA has launched the MyCGCSA App, a tool designed to help consumers verify product authenticity when shopping in stores, online, and in informal markets.

KENYA LAUNCHES TEXTILE AND FASHION TRAINING PROGRAM TO BOOST JOBS

The Kenyan government has introduced a textile and apparel skills enhancement program across 15 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to create more job opportunities in the sector. As part of the initiative, the State Department for TVET will revamp the curriculum into credential-based training, allowing trainees to gain job-ready skills faster, graduate sooner, and secure employment or start their own businesses.

THE FASHION AND DESIGN SUMMIT WILL HOLD APRIL 8TH IN GHANA

The Fashion and Design Summit will hold next month, April 8th in Ghana at the British Council. The theme of the event is Building the Blueprint: Structuring Ghana's Fashion Industry for Global Success and it is held in partnership with Fashion Forum Africa and Debonair Afrik. The Summit is open to fashion designers, industry professionals, students, and fashion enthusiasts who want to gain insights into the country's ecosystem.

SOUTH AFRICA FASHION WEEK RETURNS THIS APRIL WITH 27 COLLECTIONS FOR SS25 SHOW

Now in its 28th year, South African Fashion Week (SAFW) will take place from April 24–26 at The Forum, Hyde Park, Johannesburg. The three-day event will feature seven shows and 24 collections, with designers including Gert Johan Coetzee, Thabo Makhetha, The Bam Collective, and Jessica-Ann Shepard, the 2024 Mr Price New Talent Search winner.

SOUTH AFRICAN-BASED DIRECTOR, MONDE GUMEDE, EXPLORES SNEAKER CULTURE IN NEW NIKE X SPOTIFY AFRICA FILM

South African-based filmmaker Monde Gumede directs The Alchemist, a new film from Spotify Africa and Nike that explores sneaker culture and its deep connection to music. Set to premiere on 26 March, the film features South African culture curators DBN Gogo and Omagoqa, showcasing the fusion of sound, style, and street culture.


Alongside the film’s release, Spotify Africa will launch a curated playlist titled On Tour Africa: Sounds of the Air Max Dn8, going live on 21 March. Through this partnership, Spotify and Nike highlight the intersection of music and fashion, blending movement, creativity, and innovation to shape global culture.

SOUTH AFRICAN BRAND, RICH MNISI CELEBRATES A DECADE WITH THE "NAMBU" COLLECTION.

To mark ten years in the African fashion industry, Rich Mnisi has released their trans-seasonal 25 collection titled "Nambu" which translates to river. The collection marks the brand's journey, and symbolises the endless flow of creativity that has helped shaped the brand. For the trans-seasonal collection campaign, MNISI explores nationalism and uses different African flags as a nod to cultural influence. The collection features looks ranging from swimwears, knitwears, versatity shorts, and striking feminine silohuettes in bold fabrics.
