At the Creative Africa Nexus Weekend Summit in Algiers, Nigeria's Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, called for the empowerment of Africa’s fashion and textile sector. In her keynote address, Musawa highlighted the continent’s rich textile heritage, citing iconic fabrics like Adire, Kente, and Ankara, and stressed the urgent need to boost local production. She noted that nearly 90% of Ankara consumed in Africa is imported, costing the continent $3 billion annually. Musawa outlined plans to establish cooperatives, manufacturing hubs, and training programs to reclaim Africa's fashion narrative, boost economic growth, and create millions of jobs, particularly for women and youth. She also emphasized the importance of updating intellectual property laws to protect Africa's cultural heritage from exploitation.

Jumia Technologies has announced the closure of its South African e-commerce platform, Zando, by the end of 2024. The move, part of Jumia's broader cost-cutting strategy, will also see the company exit Tunisia. Jumia’s CEO, Francis Dufay, explained that these decisions were necessary as the operations in these countries no longer aligned with the company’s goals. Approximately 110 jobs will be affected across South Africa and Tunisia. Jumia will continue to operate in countries like Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Kenya, focusing on markets with better prospects for profitability. This follows a series of foreign companies, including BNP Paribas, HSBC, and Shell, leaving South Africa this year.
