What Happened In African Fashion This Week

African fashion opens up the second month of 2025 with an eventful week maintaining its position as a bustling industry. As we round up the first week of February, we hope that you have left informed.

Ahead of Mowalola's New York City Sample Sale happening from February 6th to 9th, the Nigerian-British designer, in collaboration with ESSX had an opening day pop-up where she displayed her last three collections. It was an invite-only affair, and in between the pretty faces of potential shoppers and the sick fits on display, it was said to have been one for the books-an unforgettable sample sale pop-up.



Collaboration



On the 2nd of February Slawn dropped a teaser video announcing his upcoming collaboration on the Slawn x Nike Air Max 90 ‘Speckle’ collection . The video voice over was covered by the American rapper, Lil Yatchy. This collection is a limited collectors item and it is expected to drop within a few weeks. it will be available at Nike, the Snkrs app, and select stockists globally. Slawn is the first Nigerian breed artist to collaborate with Nike shoes.



Event





Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ayo Edebiri, and Tyla have been announced as a members of the host committee for the 2025 MET Gala which is formally known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit. The 2025 gala is themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” with the dress code theme “Tailored for Us”. The theme is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The host committee plays a crucial role in shaping the event and its themes; their duties include helping to ensure the event’s success by reaching out to their networks to increase attendance. The committee also attends a special dinner before the main gala.


Economic

The renowned African designer, Kwaku Bediako, founder of Chocolate, and content creator Wode Maya met with Africa’s richest entrepreneur and philanthropist, Aliko Dangote in Grenada. Aliko was present to deliver the keynote speech and discuss economic ties for the country's 51st independence celebration.


Personality




Yemi Alade who got her first Grammy nomination in the Best African Music Performance category for her song Tomorrow graces the 67th Awards show in Nigerian Edo traditional bridal attire. Her regal gown featured intricate beadwork and dramatic wave-like pleats that cascaded down into a statement mermaid-style train. She paired the look with traditional coral bead accessories, including a layered necklace, matching bracelets, and an intricately styled beaded crown. This dress was designed by the bespoke brand Djec faashion and the regal outfit was put together by Shitta Athena Prisca.


Personality




The Nigerian singer, Rema who is a first time nominee for his album "HEIS", is seen on the red carpet in a mix of streetwear and high fashion. His black leather jacket, sleek trousers, and statement accessories strikes the perfect balance between relaxed and refined
