What Happened in the African Fashion Industry this Week

Welcome to the latest edition of Clearly Invincible's fashion news roundup. Today, we're diving into a variety of compelling topics that are shaping the fashion landscape.

Education

On Thursday, June 13, FSF at 12pm EST had an insightful conversation with author and WWD Archives editor Tonya Blazio-Licorish and industry icon Bethann Hardison. Get a sneak peek of “Black in Fashion: 100 Years of Style, Influence & Culture,” a new book celebrating the profound impact of Black voices in fashion, as documented by Women’s Wear Daily since 1910.

Economic

The South African apparel industry has welcomed new government regulations that will impose higher costs on Chinese retailers like Shein and Temu. These regulations will tax batches of parcels below R500 at a rate of 45% plus VAT, aligning them with the rates local retailers pay. Michael Lawrence, executive director of the National Clothing Retail Federation (NCRF), expressed approval, noting the urgent need for such measures. The NCRF and Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu) have been advocating for this change to address the unfair competition posed by these foreign retailers. Temu responded, asserting that their competitive prices result from supply chain efficiencies, not tax loopholes. Further comments from Temu and Shein are awaited regarding the new regulations.

Brand

Maison Kébé’s Torodo Collection premiere was an exclusive event held in Dakar, Senegal, on Sunday, June 9th, attended by invitation only. Among the distinguished guests were Newson Shawn and Awa Kebe. Maison Kébé, founded in Dakar in 2020, is celebrated for its sophisticated ready-to-wear collections that elegantly embody Afro-diasporic heritage. The brand emphasizes sustainability and African craftsmanship, offering professional training for local artisans. Each piece by Maison Kébé merges tradition with modernity, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Africa in high fashion.

Showcase

South African designers have a unique opportunity to showcase their brands internationally at the Milan Fashion Week 2024 trade show. The Department of Small Business Development, in partnership with The Fashion Firm South Africa, invites designers to participate in this prestigious event in Italy this September. Eligible designers must be Seda-registered, over 21, have a valid passport and tax clearance certificate, and complete an Export Readiness Assessment. Applications, including a brand profile and a Spring/Summer 24/25 lookbook, close on June 30, with successful candidates notified by July 10. This initiative offers a platform for designers to gain international exposure, joining previous participants like The Bam Collective.

Film

The ‘Roots: Made in Africa’ fashion industry pop-up tour, organized by Lhaude Africa and Ace Avenue Agency, aims to unite African fashion stakeholders for networking, collaboration, and increased visibility. This initiative, held in Accra from June 7-9, 2024, featured fashion professionals, brands, investors, and leaders engaging in B2B and B2C activities. With panel discussions and exhibitions, the event will showcase African creativity and foster a supportive ecosystem. Following Accra, the tour will travel to Johannesburg and Nairobi later in 2024, promoting Pan-African collaboration and trade.
