What Happened In The African Fashion Industry This Week.

Economy




H&M South Africa recently hosted the Sustainable Production Africa Summit, uniting key players in the clothing and textile sector to discuss strategies for creating a sustainable local industry. Held in Cape Town, the summit focused on fostering collaboration and innovation to establish a circular economy. H&M's country manager, Caroline Nelson, emphasized the brand's commitment to sustainability and economic growth through local employment. Key speaker Josef El Natour highlighted H&M’s sustainability goals, including a 56% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

DP World has announced its entry into the retail and fashion logistics sector with the acquisition of Cargo Services Far East Ltd, a leading global supply chain provider based in Hong Kong. This strategic move enhances DP World’s capabilities in origin services, allowing for the efficient movement of goods from factories to consumers. With over 2,500 employees in multiple regions including Asia, Europe, and the US, Cargo Services brings a wealth of experience and an extensive portfolio of logistics solutions, particularly for high-fashion and retail clients.

This November, Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, will host the third annual Confections x Collections (CxC), coinciding with its 125th anniversary and showcasing Africa's finest slow fashion designers. Curated by Twyg, the event will run from November 5 to 9, 2024, transforming the hotel's spaces into a stylish venue for intimate fashion shows featuring notable designers like Lukhanyo Mdingi and RICH MNISI from South Africa, alongside Bubu Ogisi of IAMISIGO and Adeju Thompson of Lagos Space Programme from Nigeria.

Nigerian actor and influencer Temi Otedola made her debut at Paris Fashion Week by walking the runway for the Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris Spring-Summer 2025 show, a significant milestone in her fashion career. Accompanied by a star-studded lineup including Eva Longoria and Kendall Jenner, Temi expressed her pride in showcasing the beauty of African womanhood as L’Oréal’s Digital African Ambassador.


Event


At the recent Global Cultural Experience held on the sidelines of UNGA79, BALARBA stood out as one of the few attires representing Nigeria’s rich tradition and culture. The event highlighted the beauty and significance of Nigerian heritage, with Honorable Hannatu Musa Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, playing a key role in ensuring Nigeria’s vibrant culture was well-represented.



Fashion Week


The highly anticipated African Fashion Week Paris officially kicked off on September 26, 2024, with the launch of Le Premier Voyage. The showcase featured three talented designers: Victor Hart M, Emmy Kasbit, and Bubu Ogisi. The event featured engaging conversations led by Ramata Diallo from the African Fashion Tour Podcast, making this a celebration of creativity and African fashion excellence. Clearly Invincible was in attendance and will be sharing an in-depth review soon. Keep an eye on our social media pages for more.

The Visionaries Fashioning Africa (VFA) Panel Talk brought together key figures shaping the future of African fashion. Nsimba Valene led an insightful discussion with Bubu Ogisi, Creative Director of IAMISIGO, Emmanuel Okoro, Creative Director of Emmy Kasbit alongside its CEO Daniel Olurin, David Tlale, Creative Director of David Tlale, and Ntsika Tyatya, Culture and Communication Lead for Maxhosa Africa.

The BoF 500 Class of 2024 has introduced 100 new names to its prestigious index of global fashion influencers. This year's class includes trailblazers from diverse backgrounds such as Vilnius-based Thomas Plantega, Pakistani designer Faraz Manan, and Rwandan entrepreneur Maryse Mbonyumutwa. Notable figures in the media and creative space include Polish movement director Pat Boguslawski, German model Leon Dame, and fearless Kenyan-American podcaster Recho Omondi. Joining the ranks of executives like Gap Inc's Richard Dickson and Abercrombie & Fitch’s Fran Horowitz, these visionaries are driving impactful change across the fashion industry.

Fashion Week


MAXHOSA AFRICA, led by Chief Creative Director Laduma Ngxokolo, made history as the first African-made African designer brand to showcase on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar. Since its inception in 2011, MAXHOSA had been driven by Ngxokolo's conviction to create a luxury institution that highlighted the richness of African culture. With its AW 2024 collection, titled “My Conviction,” the brand continued to celebrate African aesthetics and craftsmanship, solidifying its role in shaping the global fashion landscape.

CANEX (Creative Africa Nexus) took center stage at the Tranoï Women’s Fashion Show, presenting a diverse array of exceptional African designers. This showcase highlighted the unique creations of talents such as Thebe Magugu, Mafimafi, and Kente Gentlemen, among others, celebrating Africa’s rich fashion heritage. The event brought together international collectives from China and Korea as well, fostering a global exchange of creativity.
